What is validated and how is it encoded?+
Technical validation. The GTIN is checked for 14 digits and a modulo-10 check digit. Variable fields use GS1 character set 82; spaces and accented characters are not allowed. Date fields require a complete calendar date from 2000 to 2099 and are encoded as YYMMDD.
GS1 encoding. The DataMatrix uses ECC 200 and FNC1 in the first position. A variable-length field is followed by an FNC1 separator when more data follows (ASCII 29 / GS when scanned). Fixed-length fields are encoded first; the preview and exports use the same order.
What validation covers. Validation covers format, check digit, field length, character set and date order. The actual allocation of the GTIN by GS1 is not checked. Sample data is provided for illustration.
